Grass to 60cm tall. Spikelets in oblong purplish dense inflorescence.
E facing slate scree with Codonopsis, Lonicera, Juniperus, Papaver, Rosa.

Identification Notes: Verified with Flora of the USSR. Vol.2, V. L. Komarov and Tsvelev 'Grasses of the Soviet Union'. Perennial and densely tufted. Leaves narrow, linear and scabrous. Ligule short membranous. Leaf sheath with two diverging lobes at apex. Inflorescence a spike with many spikelets, narrow linear and flat, greenish-purple. Spikelet 1 flowered or with also one aborted floret. Each spikelet with scabrous, setiform glumes (3-4 fid). Lemmas hairy, scabrous with short acute point at apex. Rachis of spikelet hispid falling off with glumes.
