Acaulescent plant. Leaves spiny. Capitula capitate in the middle of the leaves. Phyllaries spine tipped. Florets all tubular and yellow.
Alpine meadow with Phlomis and Alchemilla as dominants.

Identification Notes: Verified with Flora of the USSR. Vol.28, V. L. Komarov. Leaves pinnatilobed to serrate, densely spiny. Capitula with tubular florets. Narrow part of the corolla longer than the wider part. Receptacle with hairs. Corolla 5 lobed dissected to half way of the wider part. Anthers with appendages at the base. Phyllaries in several rows, linear with a spine at the top. Florets yellow, anther tube purple. (said to have purple-red florets in the Flora of the USSR)
