Grass to 50cm tall, clump forming. Inflorescence a panicle included in a long sheathing leaf at base before flowering. Spikelets one flowered. Glumes of equal sizes, membranous. Lemma to 13cm long with awn at apex not feathery.
High altitude steppe with Stipa, Festuca, Caragana and Artemisia.

Identification Notes: Verified with Flora of the USSR. Vol.2, V. L. Komarov. Leaves narrow, linear involute. Ligule membranous to 2mm long. Inflorescence paniculate contracted inside the sheath of the upper leaves. Glumes subequal long apiculate to 3cm long. Lemmas 7-10cm long with 7 rows of hairs at base. Awn to 12cm long scabrous but not ciliate. Base of awn slightly twisted and with a swollen part at the junction.
