Flowers large with yellow petals turning orange after flowering. Leaves basal, scape thin with solitary flower.
Alpine meadow dominated by Phlomis, Bistorta, Pedicularis, Papaver. SE facing slope.
Identification Notes: Verified with Flora of the USSR. Vol.7, V. L. Komarov. Remains of old leaves and petioles forming a fibrous base. Leaves densely hairy dissected to lobed. Flower solitary on long scape. Corolla to 5cm in diameter, bright yellow drying orange. Corolla and calyx deciduous. Sepals covered with brown-black bristles. Stamens longer than the ovary. Capsules covered with white appressed hairs. Close to P. canescens and croceum. It seems that all the forms and species described in Flora of the USSR belong to the widely distributed species P. nudicaule.
