Tree along the river. Bark peeling in large sheets red inside and white with conspicuous brown lenticels outside. Leaves triangular.
River bank with tall shrubs-trees of Salix, Berberis, Lonicera, Ribes, Amygdalus. Also Sanguisorba, Ligularia, Rubus, Geum, Aegopodium.
Identification Notes: Verified with Flora of the USSR. Vol.5, V. L. Komarov and Flora of China online (www.eFloras.org). Leaves warty as the young stems. Leaf margin doubly serrate, thick. Leaf blade cuneate to truncate at base and to 5cm long. Catkins oblong to 25mm long, peduncle to 10mm long. Petioles and peduncles glabrous to pubescent. Seed with a wing more than twice as broad as the seed. Scales with three lobes, terminal one longer than the two lateral ones. Classification of the Soviet Union Betulas is very complex and in need of a revision.
