Tuberous herbaceous with basal leaves and scape branching from underground. Leaves alternate becoming smaller and bract-like above. Flowers in a terminal raceme. Bracteoles 2 leaf-like but smaller. Corolla tubular 3 lobed at apex, white. Corolla tube curved at base. Flower vanilla scented. Stamens 2 with purple-blue anthers. Nectary disc located on one side and at the base of the ovary bright green.
Alpine mountain ridge with Polygonum (Bistorta), Dracocephalum, Rhodiola, Erigeron, Androsace, Sibbaldia, Poaceae.
Identification Notes: Verified with Flora of the USSR. Vol.4, V. L. Komarov. Stem erect. Radical leaves with long petiole, blade tapered at both ends, glabrous and entire. Flowers in a dense bracteate spike. Calyx cleft to one side. Corolla white with 2-3 teeth at apex. Anthers 2, cordate. Stigmas bilobed and inserted in the corolla. Plant drying black.
