10cm tall herb. Leaves in a basal rosette of linear, greyish hairy leaves. Phyllaries in several rows. Capitulum to 5cm across. Ligulate florets purple female. Tubular florets bisexual and orange. Cypsela with white scabrous pappus hairs. Pappus as long as the florets.
Alpine mountain ridge with Polygonum (Bistorta), Dracocephalum, Rhodiola, Erigeron, Androsace, Sibbaldia, Poaceae.
Identification Notes: Verified with Flora of the USSR. Vol.25, V. L. Komarov. Small rosette plant with solitary capitulum to 10cm tall. Capitula to 35mm in diameter, ligulate florets to 20mm long violet, ligule flaccid. Ligules rolled in a tube when fading ? Phyllaries in 2-3 rows, unequal with unicellular hairs. Tubular florets with glabrous corolla lobes. Anthers without appendages at base. Cypsela densely hairy, pappus of long white scabrous hairs plus a few short ones at the base. Receptacle pitted, alveoles with wavy margin. Very difficult to observe any difference with Aster alpinus or A.flaccidus. Difficult group.
