30cm tall with taproot and a single stem. Leaves hairy with sharply serrate margin. Capitula grouped at apex of the scape, with short peduncle. Phyllaries numerous, lanceolate. Florets all tubular pink-purple with elongated corolla tube. Anthers tube and style long exserted, dark purple.

Identification Notes: Verified with Flora of the USSR. Vol.27, V. L. Komarov. Perennial, root collar covered with fibrous split remains of previous year's leaves. Leaves entire regularly toothed, each tooth with a small cartilaginous cusp. Capitula 3, terminal aggregated in a small corymb. Capitulum to 2.5cm in diameter. Phyllaries in several rows, unequal and covered with stiff hairs and with an apical curved black spur. Receptacle with linear, subulate lustrous and persistent scales. Florets with narrow tube and campanulate corolla. Anthers with woolly appendage at base. Pappus with feathery hairs, deciduous; outer hairs forming a corona at apex of cypsela.
