Very spiny plant to 1m tall covered with purple hairs. Leaves 2-3 time pinnate with sharp spines on margin. Capitula to 2-3cm in diameter aggregated in a dense terminal spike. Bracts leaf-like. Florets all tubular and purple.
Alpine meadow with Phlomis and Alchemilla as dominants.
Identification Notes: Verified with Flora of the USSR. Vol.27, V. L. Komarov. Leaves archnoid hairy. Phyllaries lanceolate with purple cusp. Capitula homogamous. Florets with narrow tube and campanulate corolla. Anthers rounded at apex with basal appendage. Anther tube and stigmas long exserted. Receptacle covered in dense bristles. Cypselas grey obovoid, transversally rugose. Pappus of many short plumose hairs not fused at base and shedding one by one.
