Salvia buchananii Hedge

Location:San Luis Potosi, Xilitla, near La Trinidad.
Coordinates: 21°24'04" N, 99°04'06" W Alt: 1870m

Erect herb 40 cm tall. Flowers bright pink. Calyces green. Flowers and calyx aromatic when crushed. Leaves glossy, pale beneath.
Roadside rocky cliff, E-facing.

Identification Notes: Verified with Sergio Zamudio, Brenda Y. Bedolla-García 2013 'Discovery of Salvia buchananii (Lamiaceae) in the wild in Querétaro, Mexico' Rev. Mex. Biodiv. vol.84 no.2 and M. Epling, C. 1939 'A revision of Salvia subgenus Calosphace' Fedde Repert Sp. Nov. Beih. 110:1-388. Subgenus Calosphace, Section brandegia. Leaves coriaceous, leaf base cuneate and decurrent on the petiole. Hairs restricted to the midvein. Bracts green late deciduous. Corolla to 40mm long densely covered with purplish multicellular hairs. Corolla tube glabrous inside constricted at the base and with two scales. Styles hairy with unequal stylar branches. Connective to 18mm long. This species was only known in cultivation and described from Queretaro at the same time as this collection.
