Location:Veracruz, Mpio Tequila.
Coordinates: 18°43'22" N, 97°03'50" W Alt: 1835m

Arching shrub 1.5 m tall with dark purple stems and petioles. Inflorescence axis bright pink. Tepals pale pink. Stamens white. Immature fruits green.
Roadside, ruderal, disturbed habitat at forest edge. Orange clay soil with Sambucus, Hypericum and Thalictrum.

Identification Notes: Verified with Nowicke, J.W. 1969 'Palynotaxonomic study of the Phytolaccaceae' Annals Missouri Bot. Gard. 56(2): 288-290. Subgenus Phytolacca. Sepals purplish, 5. Carpels 10 completely fused. Inflorescence raceme to 15cm long. P. purpurascens is native to Veracruz and said to have stamens in two whorls (character difficult to observe) this species is said to be a possible introgression with P. americana. P americana is now a widespread weed worldwide.
