Lonicera mexicana (Kunth) Rehder

Location:Veracruz, Mpio Calcahualco, Barranco de San Miguel, Tlacotiopa.
Coordinates: 19°06'28" N, 97°12'07" W Alt: 2642m

Erect shrub 2 m tall. Bark orange-brown, peeling in long strips. Stems with solid white pith. Flowers dark pink, paired, pendent. Fruits blue-black. Young shoots have larger leaves.
Stream gorge with Pinus and Quercus forest. NE facing side of the gorge. In shade at edge of open area with Viburnum, Sambucus, Solanum, Ferns and Alchemilla.

Identification Notes: Verified with Jose Angel Villarreal Q. 2000 'Flora del Bajio y de Regiones Adyacentes' Vol. 88. Subgenus Chamaecerasus section Isika subsection Purpurascentes. Leaves sparsely hairy abaxially. Pith solid. Flowers paired on long peduncles. Bracts and braceoles present, as long as to half as long as ovaries. Bracteoles fused into pairs. Ovaries unfused, glabrous. Calyx reduced, corolla gibbous at base otherwise tubular and almost regular. Berries purple, few seeded.
