Harpalyce mexicana Rose

Location:Jalisco, NNW of Bolaños.
Coordinates: 21°53'11" N, 103°49'52" W Alt: 1986m

Shrub 1.5 m tall. Flowering before the leaves. Flowers pink and white. Standard and lateral petals pink; keel twisted, white with pale pink at base, contorted, splitting into two. Filaments white. Anthers yellow.
Open Quercus and Pinus forest with Pinus lumholtzii, Quercus radiata, Juniperus durangensis, Arctostaphylos pungens, Arbutus madrensis and Arbutus tessellata. Growing on rocks and leaf litter under Quercus with Dodonaea viscosa, Agave and Compositae.

Identification Notes: Verified with McVaugh, Rogers 1987 'Flora Novo-Galiciana : a descriptive account of the vascular plants of Western Mexico. Volume 5, Leguminosae' Ann Arbor : University of Michigan Press. Calyx strongly bilabiate, 3 upper lobes and 2 lower lobes entirely united. Stamens 10, filaments all fused to near the apex. Anthers dimorphic 5 large and 5 small. Fruit woody and dehiscing along both sutures. Plants with orange, peltate glands. Flowers said to be resupinate for the genus but do not appear to be on this plant.
