Most plants in a botanical garden are not only grown for their aesthetic beauty but also for their scientific value. Therefore correct and up to date labeling in a botanical garden is essential to enable the collection to be used for research, but also to inform the public of the correct usage of the name.The present database results from the plant name verification activities ongoing at the Kew Herbarium. Plants are sent to the herbarium for checking, a herbarium voucher specimen is pressed and in some occasions living plants are photographed.
It is possible to check whether the plant has been verified or not. This is usually indicated by the printed letter F or a dot on the right bottom hand corner of the specimen labels.
