Notes: Verified with Otto Degener 'New illustrated Flora of the Hawaiian Islands'. (revision in Novon 5 (1995): 183 is missing in Kew library). Shrub, densely brown stellate hairy. Leaves orbicular with basal halves of leaves not overlapping. Involucral bracts very small to lacking. Flowers axillary and terminal. Calyx cupular brown stellate hairy with equal lobes. Corolla orange-brown, hairy, lower three petals reflexed, upper two erect. Staminal column with 5 apical lobes and with many stamens. Anthers dark with ornamented pollen grains. Stigmas 5, style hairy and dark red-purple. Ovary 5 celled densely sericeous hairy. Flowers are not green but epicalyx lobes are small so not likely to be the hybrid H. giffardianus x hualalaiensis. Grows on Lava fields.
