Notes: Verified with Ohwi, J. 'Flora of Japan'. Scandent shrub. Leaves ovate, cordate acutely toothed and papery. Corymb very large to 20cm across. Sterile flowers few (with reduced stamens and ovary) to 40mm across. Fertile flowers many with petals connate and calyptrately deciduous, scented. Stamens more than 20.

Field notes: Plant to 12m with spread to 1m. Growing against Acer mono, with Quercus mongolica var. grosseserrata, Tilia japonica, Betula platyphylla, Acer mono, Abies sachalinensis, with Sasa dominant on the floor.
