Cistus inflatus Pourr.

Verified by: Temperate sect. 28 July 2008
Notes: Verified with Demoly, J.P. 'L'identite du Cistus psilosepalus Sw.' Acta. bot. Gallica, 1997, 144(1), 35-44. and Flora Iberica Vol 3. Leaves sessile, cordate at base, with a revolute margin. Leaf blade glandular, stellate hairy abaxially. Sepals 5, 3 outer ones with a strongly revolute margin, margin glandular hairy. Outer sepals also cordate at base. Petals white with a yellow claw. Style short but not lacking. This species is called C.psilosepalus in Flora Europaea and Flora Iberica but Demoly, J.P. suggests that C. psilosepalus type information refers to a hybrid Cistus x laxus Ait. (C. hirsutus known as psilosepalus x populifolius) therefore a new name was given to this species C. inflatus Pourr. ex Demoly. Unfortunately it is unlikely that C. inflatus will be widely used in the near future and P. psilosepalus name will still be commonly found in gardens. C. x laxus has external sepals glabrous on the back but C. inflatus is hairy on the back.
