Verified by: Temperate sect. 14 July 2014
Notes: Verified with Ohwi, J. 'Flora of Japan' and Yamamoto 1998 'Japanese color guide of Hydrangea'. Leaves margin incised, abaxially sparsely hairy along veins. Inflorescence a corymb with crispate hairy rachis. Flowers white, sterile flowers pink. Petals spathulate not narrowed at base. Style 3. Ovary 2/3 inferior. Calyx lobes short. This is under synonymy of H. macrophylla i Flora of Japan but in most horticultural book this species is accepted depite reservations. A recent phylogeny: (Unraveling Extensive Paraphyly in the Genus Hydrangea s. l. with Implications for the Systematics of Tribe Hydrangeeae' Marie-Stéphanie Samain , Stefan Wanke , and Paul Goetghebeur. Systematic Botany, 35(3):593-600. 2010) seems to indicate that H. serrata and most H. macrophylla but not all are part of the same species. Var. megacarpa not accepted said to be a cultivars 'Megarcarpa' with leaves partially white variegated, fertile flowers lilac and sterile white?
