Malvaceae
Helmiopsiella madagascariensis Arènes

Verified by: Cable, S.19 September 2011
Notes: Verified with Arènes, J. 1959. Sterculiacées. Fl. Madagasc 131:1–537 and Barnett 'Helmiopsiella' in Bull. Mus. Nat. Hist. Nat. 4(10). 1988: 69. Leaves cordate at base and caudate at apex. Plant sligthly stellate hairy, glabrescent. Inflorescence terminal. Flowers yellow. Calyx stellate hairy, splitting irregularly. Petals ciliate short (abnormal flowers due to cultivation ?). Androecium of 20 stamens with bilocular anthers and 5 ciliate lanceolate staminodes. Stamens fused at base into a ring. Ovary densely hairy with 10 locules and 10 free styles. Styles fused at base. The flowers are much smaller than they should be, possibly due to cultivation and stress. Close to H. leandrii which should have less stamens (20) like our specimen but maybe this is also due to cultivation.
